SMEs should be aware of wireless security
Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) should be aware of the security issues surrounding wireless internet access, it has been claimed.
According to Tony Neate, managing director of Get Safe Online, SMEs with wireless internet connections should ensure networks are encrypted so that they are not accessed by unauthorised third-parties.
Personal users were also warned to follow the same security process. "People have got to be very aware of privacy when it comes to using wireless … Make sure that nobody has access to your network [or is] piggybacking off you," said Mr Neate. "[It is important to] check out the security requirements [of wireless internet connections]," he added.
Indeed, a recent survey for Get Safe Online found that in addition to 66 per cent of SMEs using a computer to house critical documentation, 36 per cent have been affected by malware.
Get Safe Online is organised through the collaboration of a number of businesses, in conjunction with the Serious Organised Crime Agency and the British government.
