SMEs being pursued for backdated utility bills

Many small-to-medium business enterprises (SMEs) are being pursued by energy providers after having their meters miscalculated, according to one business advisor.

The Forum of Private Business (FSB) has claimed that SMEs are being left alone to defend themselves from these backdated bills following the transformation of Energywatch into the Consumer Focus organisation.

Julia Barnett, owner of the Barnett Fare bakery, said she is being chased by energy-provider E.ON for a backdated payment of £40,500 as the bills which were sent to her were too low.

"There's now no protection for small businesses in this situation. Since our case came to light, many business-owners have been in touch who thought they were the only ones facing these bills," she stated

Ms Barnett added: "We should band together individually as it's difficult to counteract the enormous scale of these big energy companies."

The Carbon Trust has increased the size of its energy-efficiency loan from £100,000 to £200,000.
