Smaller businesses have poor web skills

Many of Britain's small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have poor internet skills, it has been claimed.

According to comments made by Peter Clayton, chief executive of the Association of Professional Recruitment Consultants (APRC), SMEs usually possess poor web skills, particularly when it comes to advertising jobs online.

"[With SMEs,] anything up to ten or fifteen employees, their internet skills with regards to web advertising is usually very poor," said Mr Clayton.

"I train a lot of companies and they need to get to 40 or 50 employees before their internet skills are [sufficient]," he added.

Indeed, Mr Clayton added that although a basic set of skills for use with Microsoft Word was once "helpful", computer and internet skills are of now of paramount importance for a majority of roles.
