Problem of office energy wastage highlighted

A number of office-based businesses are "pretty bad" in terms of energy wastage, it has been claimed.

Nicolas Schoon, the editor of the Ends Report has identified that energy wastage in office-based environments is a significant issue, especially given the prevalence of service-oriented roles, with large numbers of individuals working with computers throughout their working day.

The Ends Report is a journal - published monthly - specialising in business and environmental policy in Britain.

"Energy use in offices is a very, very big deal," said Mr Schoon.

"It's very significant given that we're not an industrial economy any more, we have a service economy and that's how we get our wealth these days," he added.

Indeed, Mr Schoon believes that although energy wastage can occur in a number of different areas, most commonly it occurs when either lights are unnecessarily left on, or when an area is illuminated by too many lights.

The use of electronic equipment, other than computers, was also identified as a particular source of energy wastage.
