Tax should be viewed as a sign of success, small business owners have been told.
John de Groot, the managing director of StartupCo, suggested paying more tax should be a goal for a small firm.
He said that small firms should focus on paying more tax, "because if they pay more tax they are actually making more profit, depending on what tax we are talking about".
Mr De Groot was commenting on the Annual Small Business Survey conducted by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform, which found that 12 per cent of respondents believed taxation to be their biggest obstacle.
The StartupCo managing director said it was "not healthy" if a large proportion of small business owners are threatened, "getting excited and annoyed" about a tax burden that is increasing strains on their business finance.
He warned that on an individual basis, small business owners are "able to do anything about [it] anyway".
