Restaurant chain McDonalds has been granted permission to offer new courses in the UK, it has emerged.
According to reports, the new courses could potentially be used as components of either an A-level standard qualification, or an advanced diploma.
However, there has been some criticism, with opponents complaining that the new diplomas will not be sufficiently academic; a number of university admission tutors have already confirmed students with diplomas would not be admitted, reports the BBC.
"It is going to be a tough course, but once you have got a qualification in management you can probably go anywhere," said prime minister Gordon Brown, during an interview on GMTV. "I think that is the important thing, companies prepared to train people up which they weren't doing before, in the way that we want them to do, in a far greater number."
Dubbed Level 3 courses, they will also be offered by Network Rail and Flybe.
