Many SMEs are fearful of VOIP

Many small-to-medium business enterprises (SMEs) are scared of Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP technology), one IT expert has claimed.

According to Technology Means Business (TMB), companies are fearful of this new technology as they do not know how it works, how much it costs, or what it is capable of.

Dr Adam Le Gresley, head of operations at TMB, said: "It's not that it's not cost effective but a fear they won't understand it."

He stated it is not really a valid argument to say that the cost of VoIP puts small businesses off it.

TMB added that when the setting up of an online registry of phones is discussed, many people become quite scared as fixing it does not seem obvious.

However, VoIP providers have a "good customer system" in place, concluded the organisation.

Research from silicon.com, the business and technology news website, and the Bathwick Group revealed that 60 per cent of small businesses considered investing in VoIP last year.
