HSE issues new warning on employee safety

The UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has issued a warning on employee safety following an accident at an electronics manufacturing firm in Enfield.

Following the accident, which resulted in an employee losing the tip of his finger, the HSE is calling upon firms to ensure that risk assessments are conducted on all workplace machinery.

The victim also received a number of lacerations on his right hand.

"Our investigation found that the machine did not have any guards covering the 18 sets of rollers, which created crushing and trapping hazards," said Kerry Williams, an inspector for the HSE.

"[The firm] had not undertaken a risk assessment of the machine which would have highlighted the exposed rollers," she added.

The HSE is also calling upon firms to ensure that machinery is equipped with sufficient safety guards.

Britain's HSE was established in response to the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974.

Businesses that employ staff to work with heavy machinery must have comprehensive insurance, covering Public Liability and Employer's Liability.
