Homeworking could benefit businesses
Offering employees the opportunity to work from home is giving employers access to a wider pool of candidates, according to an industry observer.
Nesta Holden of the National Group on Homeworking (NGH) said that businesses can benefit from higher levels of productivity when they have people working from home.
"It is well established and commonly accepted that productivity is higher among homeworkers," she said.
And since many people are attracted to the flexibility afforded by working from home, employers gain access to a more varied group of potential employees, according to Ms Holden.
The NGH also advises employers to offer the same rights to workers whether they are homeworkers or based at an office.
Improved productivity and lower overheads mean that it is advantageous to businesses to "engage with homeworkers as employees", Ms Holden concluded.
Figures on the Home Business website show that 62 per cent of people who work mainly from home are self-employed.
Home-workers need business insurance too.
