Employees who choose to work from home tend to get an "improved" balance between their work and their family commitments, according to an industry expert.
Companies across the UK are increasing the flexible working schemes on offer, as employees seek to maintain a balance between their work activities and their free time and home life, the Telework Association claimed.
Brian Higton, chairman of the organisation which provides support for businesses wishing to adopt flexible working schemes, said that complex lifestyle choices are at the heart of the desire to work from home.
He added: "Reasons for this include the increased cost and difficulty of commuting, more complex lifestyles, particularly for families with children, making daily commuting difficult and many people looking for an improved work-life balance."
According to a survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, more than one-fifth of the UK's workers spend more than 45 hours a week at their job.
