HM Revenue and Customs issues fraud warning
The UK's HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) office has issued a warning over increases in fraudulent correspondence that purports to originate from itself, it has emerged.
According to the HMRC, since December 2006, the number of fraudulent attacks - which have been listed on the organisation's website - has increased from one to a minimum of eight, reports the BBC.
"Their audacity beggars belief," said a representative of the HMRC.
"There is an emerging pattern - when we close one down they go to another channel," he added.
Commonly, the delivery of the fraudulent attack is via email and can include a number of duplicitous hooks, including those relating to tax rebates, certificates relating to anti-terrorism and export clearance.
HMRC was created in 2005, following the merger of Her Majesty's Customs and Excise and the Inland Revenue.
