Graduate recruitment harder for SMEs

News from Simply Business - providers of business insurance, invoice finance, landlord insurance and buy-to-let mortgages to small and medium sized businesses.

Small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can be faced with problems when it comes to the recruitment of graduates, it has been claimed.

According to comments made by Dan Hawes, the co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau (GRB), UK-based SMEs can encounter difficulties as a majority of graduates prefer to seek employment with larger "blue-chip" firms based in London.

"Graduate schemes are definitely more popular with very large multi-national firms that have the resources to offer a very defined career path and have the experience and the brand awareness to attract a high number of people," said Mr Hawes.

"Smaller firms tend to advertise on an ad-hoc basis," he added.
