The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) responded today to new research from Travelodge into the claiming of business expenses.

Hotel chain Travelodge claims that the average worker in the UK makes an extra £204 a year through expense claims.

Among some of the more costly items found to have been claimed for by employees were plastic surgery and a diamond engagement ring.

Commenting on the findings, Stephen Alambritis, spokesman for the FSB, warned that if word gets out that a firm has lax procedures for expenses, then investors and bank managers could be the next to find out.

"What we urge all businesses to do is to have good tight expense claim procedures that are fair and firm across the board," he said.

Mr Alambritis advised businesses to set in place a culture where all expenses claimed can be backed up by receipts.
