Fake Microsoft updates could pose threat to SMEs

windows%20logo.jpgEmails encouraging users to download fake patches for Microsoft Windows could pose a threat to small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), it has emerged.

According to reports, fake security bulletins are being emailed which urge users to download a "cumulative security update for Internet Explorer", thereby leaving the user vulnerable to a trojan virus - known as Downloader.Win32.Agent.avk - which will instead be installed.

"You wonder, does it really matter that there are these strange discrepancies in the way the fake security alert is written," said Lenny Zeltser, a volunteer for the Sans Internet Storm Centre (INC).

"People who would notice probably would be the kind of people who wouldn't click on the link," he added.

The link within the rogue email states "Download this update".

Microsoft is expected to release its monthly update tomorrow (June 12th).

The INC was established in 2001.
