Equifax issues phishing warning to small businesses

According to Equifax, 3% of those who receive phishing emails from phoney banks are responding to requests for private information, despite frequent warnings.

Neil Munroe, the director of external affairs for Equifax, commented that a bank or a building society is not permitted to send an email requesting information about an account. Therefore any such emails should be deleted without being opened.

"Phishing in small businesses might not just be to get bank account information but might be looking for information to then subsequently start ID fraud on the company by changing company details and whatever," warned Mr Munroe.

Interestingly, data released by ClickZ.com has found that of those who perform their banking operations online, 44 per cent make use of the same password details between sites. This makes it easier for criminals to commit internet fraud.
