Environmental regs are a threat to small businesses
New legislation requiring firms to provide recycling facilities for electronic goods could impact on smaller firms, according to a spokesperson from the National Association of Specialist Computer Retailers (NASCR).
In news that could be of interest to those operating a small office, NASCR representative Geoff Carr said that the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) directive could adversely affect computer electronics retailers.
"There are going to be an awful lot of people who will stop building systems; it's a unique group, it's different to people selling toasters and things," he explained.
Mr Carr also said that some small firms are not registering in an attempt to bypass the new rules.
"That's not going to work - I don't think the [Department for Trade and Industry] are stupid, really," he added.
However, the spokesperson did state that the EU rules will not have the same impact on larger operations. Mr Carr argues that bigger firms can provide the required facilities and it "only costs them a faction per unit".
NASCR is a trade association representing the computer industry. It aims to promote good will throughout the sector and to ensure that consumers who use the industry's services have peace of mind.
