Proposals for a new amendment to the energy bill that could have made it more cost-effective for homeowners to generate their own energy have been rejected.
A group of Labour MPs had been pushing for the change - which would have seen feed-in tariffs set for renewable energy fed back onto the national grid.
However, energy minister Malcolm Wicks said that this would not be the right time to consider such a move, with the opportunity for further debate due at this summer's renewable energy consultation, the BBC reports. The move was defeated by 40 votes.
The Home Builders Federation (HBF) and the Renewable Energy Association were among the industry bodies supporting feed-in tariffs.
"The financial benefits to homeowners and businesses in this initiative are a clear incentive for them to invest in renewable energy technologies," HBF executive chairman Stewart Baseley said ahead of the vote.
