Businesses have been advised to carry out an energy audit by energy management firm the Green Consultancy to highlight ways in which they could save energy.

Michael Webb, a spokesperson for the firm, said that businesses are becoming more interested in issues surrounding energy use and energy efficiency, but that the smallest businesses probably have little need for concern.

"We'd always advise that people have an energy audit done which will identify ways in which they can save energy. It depends on what sort of business you are and ways you use energy," Mr Webb said.

The spokesperson also said that working out the cost of energy efficiency is "an equation to be looked at", based on the savings made and how much it will cost to implement the necessary changes.

At the end of 2007, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) claimed that small firms are more environmentally responsible than they have been previously.

An FSB report revealed that 83 per cent of small businesses are engaged in waste minimisation and recycling.
