Bringing in flexible working arrangements that allow staff to work from home could be as beneficial to employers as it is to the employees.
That is the opinion of the Telework Association, the group established to promote the uptake of mobile and home-based working patterns.
While the advantages of such schemes to employees are measurable in terms of effects on the work-life balance of the individual, the effect it has on a business could be more tangible, according to Brian Higton, chairman of the Telework Association.
"[It offers] reduced office space requirements and attendant reductions in fixed operating costs, more flexibility in the deployment of labour and improved staff loyalty and retention as staff value being given the opportunity to work from home," said Mr Higton.
According to a survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, more than one-fifth of the UK's workers spend more than 45 hours a week at their job.
