Employees not just driven by higher salaries
Employees are motivated by more than just higher salaries, it has been claimed.
According to the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), although small to medium-sized enterprises may offer lower salaries than larger organisations, employees can find them attractive propositions because of benefits such as improved career prospects.
"Research suggests there is more to staff motivation and attracting talent than hard cash," said Emma Price, senior press officer for the CIPD.
"Employees are also attracted to non-cash rewards, such as the opportunity for personal and career development [and] recognition for a job well done," she added.
Indeed, according to the results of a 2007 recruitment survey by the CIPD, last year 84 per cent of employers reported problems with the enrolment of new staff members.
The CIPD has conducted a number of previous reports, including a study on the management of diversity and a further report on reward and diversity.
