CMI stresses importance of staff appraisals

The Chartered Management Institute (CMI) has highlighted the importance of staff appraisals.

Suggesting that staff appraisals are an integral component of the relationship between employees and their employers, the CMI believes that a member of staff should participate in an informal appraisal on a monthly basis, at the very least.

However, data released by Investors in People found that out of a study of 2,900 individuals, 29 per cent considered their appraisal to not be a beneficial use of their time.

"The formal appraisal should happen at least once a year," said Mike Petrook, a representative from the CMI.

"There should never be any surprises, and the way that can be achieved is by having informal appraisals in the shape of one-to-ones on a regular basis," he added.

Mr Petrook also noted that while, in the past, appraisals may have focused upon examining performance from a retrospective point of view, this has changed towards emphasising developmental needs and examining improvements to performance.
