CIPD: Small firms should combat staff stress

Small businesses should establish a stress management policy, according to the employee relations advisor for the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD).

Ben Willmott states that having a stress management policy is advised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and as such it is advisable that businesses carry out a stress risk assessment.

By doing this, commercial operations can establish if they have "organisational problems at work that need to be tackled".

The employee relations advisor also states that one "difficulty" with managing stress is that it can be prompted by events or situations that are outside the working environment.

Mr Willmott explains it therefore "certainly makes sense to provide sensible working opportunities, to help people balance the conflicting pressures between work and home".

The CIPD is a professional body for managers and currently has approximately 127,000 members.
