Businesses sometimes forget about their website

Small businesses do not protect themselves in case their website goes down as they overlook how significant an online presence can be, one system management has claimed.

According to Symantec, businesses should ensure a second site is available on standby in case the first does malfunction.

Guy Bunker, chief executive of Symantec, said that having a second website is standard practice in disaster recovery (DR) and business continuity (BC) planning.

However, "sometimes companies forget about their websites and how important they can be", he stated.

Mr Bunker added that part of a DR solution would be to monitor the website, although undertaking this is only "really useful" if you can do something about it if a problem is automatically detected – "a good DR solution does just that".

The suspension of Sainsburys.co.uk in June due to a technical issue is thought to have cost Sainsbury's over £1 million in lost online sales.

Sainsbury's delivers to an estimated 90,000 customers per week through its website while their average spend is thought to be about £80 per transaction.
