Business intelligence vital for survival

A business needs intelligence throughout an organisation if it is to survive the economic downturn, according to one IT firm.

Microsoft has claimed that business intelligence solutions can be implemented at a cost which is "significantly lower" than it was two or three years ago.

Tony Crowhurst, UK business intelligence manager for Microsoft, said: "The absolute realisation of businesses is that they need to make sure that access to that information is available throughout the business, as that means that they can respond to issues quicker."

One of the driving factors behind the credit crunch was a lack of information within businesses, he added.

Microsoft said traditionally business intelligence was available as an executive intelligence system and only to the top 20 per cent of a business.

Now if the person on a floor receiving goods has access to information which is appropriate to their job, then he can respond to a query meaning organisations are more flexible, concluded the firm.

According to Cognos, a business intelligence specialist, the software allows businesses to share information effectively.
