The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has issued a new call to make action against business-targeted crime a priority, it has emerged.
Specifically addressing the government, the BCC also cautioned that the organisation's membership is starting to lose faith in the ability of the police to address the issue, reports the BBC.
However, a representative from the UK's Home Office confirmed that the issue was treated with a sufficient degree of seriousness.
"This year we expect to widen the range of recorded crimes against business and will conduct another commercial victimisation survey," said the representative.
David Frost, director general of the BCC, added: "Businesses are the lifeblood of communities and crimes against business have a damaging impact on both the economic growth and future prosperity of local areas."
With a survey by the BCC showing that, over the last 12 months, a total of 59 per cent of businesses have had to face a minimum of one instance of criminal activity, it was noted that business crime results in annual costs of £12.6 billion.
The BCC operates on a not-for-profit and non-political basis.
