The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS), has highlighted the importance of distinguishing the difference between those who are simply busy at work and those who are stressed.
Steve Williams, the head of equality at ACAS, believes that while individuals may define themselves as stressed, in reality they may simply be busy. Mr Williams defines stress as a situation where the individual does not feel in control.
"I think there's a general recognition that stress is not a good thing, that it can affect productivity, it can affect performance and that it's in their interests to do something about it," said Mr Williams. "The issue is really identifying stress as opposed to simply identifying when someone is busy."
Other symptoms of stress include the feeling of powerlessness, in addition to feeling as though they are unable to perform in their role at work.
