Police officers in the City of London are preparing themselves for an increase in the number of investigations relating to mortgage fraud, it has been claimed.

Reports by the Financial Times highlight comments made by Oliver Shaw, the detective superintendent of the City police's unit for economic crime - Mr Shaw has confirmed that a total of 50 new investigators are scheduled to become operational in April.

It was also confirmed that these new investigators may initially focus their sole attentions on cases relating to mortgage fraud. "We are reacting to the pressure of the [Financial Services Authority], of other police forces," said Mr Shaw.

It was also noted that the new team of investigators, made up of both civilians and police officers, would possibly all work in the field of mortgage fraud until a redirection request was received by the yet to be created national fraud strategic authority.

Although history of policing in the City of London goes back to Roman times, the current force was established as a consequence of the City of London Police Act 1839.
