Buy-to-let preferred for investment stability
New investors prefer buy-to-let over financial markets for investment, new data has revealed.
According to the results of a study by the Mortgage Trust, of the new landlords polled, 32 per cent cited the ability to exert control over their investment as a significant determinant in their decision to use property as an investment tool.
"With buy-to-let, landlords are in the driving seat. As financial markets become increasingly volatile, this level of control will become more attractive to investors," said John Heron, managing director of the Mortgage Trust.
"Five interest rate hikes in a year have left investors increasingly risk averse," he added.
Indeed, in January 2007, the same reasoning was voiced by 28 per cent of respondents.
