Health and safety compliance difficult in construction

Compliance with the UK's health and safety standards can be difficult to achieve for small and medium-sized businesses in construction.

According to comments made by Christopher Epps, a representative for the National House Building Council (NHBC), SMEs within the construction sector can lack both the necessary resources and time to fully comply with standards in the field of health and safety.

"It's not as simple as just saying: 'We've got to get the message out to them'," said Mr Epps.

"An awful lot of them have got the message; they just haven't got the wherewithal, or the time, or the resources to do anything about it and stay solvent," he added.

Indeed, Mr Epps also noted that as a way to remain competitive, many businesses in such a position may choose to "cut corners" as a method of maintaining their competitiveness.
