The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has offered new advice in relation to Alistair Darling's forthcoming budget.
According to the CBI, when Mr Darling makes his speech next week, announcements should be kept to a minimum, as the chancellor is currently in no position to make "credible judgements".
The CBI is also concerned that the recent difficulties with Northern Rock -among other matters - has overstretched the capacity of resources at the treasury, resulting in the possibility that new proposals have not undergone adequate assessment for impact.
"Calling on the chancellor to set aside the normal budget theatricals in favour of a slimmed down, practical statement may seem fanciful," said Richard Lambert, director general of the CBI.
"Our suggestion, made more in hope than expectation, reflects turbulent times both at the Treasury and in the UK and wider world economy".
The organisation believes that the inability to make credible judgements affects the economic outlook over the near-term.
