Data released by Bloomberg shows a positive trend for UK inflation.
According to the news organisation, during the final month of 2007 there were signs that the UK's rate of inflation may have declined to the Bank of England's target rate of two per cent.
Bloomberg News has based its findings upon a study of 34 economists.
"If inflation comes in at two per cent or less, then all the clamour is going to be for rate cuts sooner rather than later,'' said Peter Dixon, an economist at Commerzbank AG in London.
"There's a very strong chance of a cut in February."
Related data will be released by the Office for National Statistics tomorrow (January 15th).
In January, the Bank of England's monetary policy committee opted to keep interest rates on hold at 5.5 per cent and will next announce its decision over interest rates on February 7th.
