Twitter 'hits 300 million users'

Micro-blogging platform Twitter now has in excess of 300 million registered users, according to new figures.

A report from Twopcharts suggests that the 300 million mark was reached some time on Monday, with approximately 5.5 new accounts being registered every second.

Of those 300 million, it is thought that around 40 million are active once a month, while some 14 million are used every day.

Twitter itself has refused to confirm the figures, saying only that they have “more than 200 million accounts.”

As previously reported, around half of all employees are now banned from using social networking sites at work.

A report from Lewis Communications and HCL Technologies suggested that employers are concerned about the impact of sites like Twitter and Facebook on productivity.
