Twitter today unveiled a new version of its web service, in the first major update of the micro-blogging phenomenon.

The updated web interface will see further integration of multimedia services like YouTube, Flickr and TwitPic, through a separate panel on the website.

The ‘new Twitter’ looks and behaves more like a web application than a static website, integrating some of the features seen in popular desktop apps like Tweetdeck.

Businesses making use of the micro-blogging platform stand to benefit from the new interface, particularly if they make use of photos or videos.

Click-through rates to these media are likely to be significantly higher, as users will no longer have to leave the homepage to see items that have been posted. This is likely to drive more traffic to business’s sites.

But some firms may have to re-train or ‘refresh’ employees who use Twitter for marketing and engagement purposes.

On their blog, Twitter said: “These changes will be rolled out as a preview over the next several weeks starting with a very small percentage of registered accounts tonight.

“During the preview, you’ll be able to switch back and forth so you have time to grow accustomed to the way things work.”
