Gender barrier affecting fewer entrepreneurs

In fitting news for a week that has just seen International Womens' Day, gender barriers are affecting fewer female entrepreneurs.

This is according to a new survey from London Business Link, in which 1,000 female entrepreneurs were questioned about the impact of their gender on business opportunities.

The survey found that 20 per cent think they need to work harder than their male counterparts. While this is still 20 per cent too high, it is significantly less than the 38 per cent reported last year.

It seems that the recession may have contributed to a closing in the gender gap. Almost 50 per cent of those surveyed said they thought they were able to adapt particularly well, and that this had helped them navigate the choppy waters of the downturn.

But there is still a long way to go before women have equality in the workplace. According to other recent surveys, women are frequently unfairly overlooked for senior positions, and a significant pay gap still exists.
