A study by online communications provider Skype has revealed that one in three Britons will be working over the Christmas holiday this year.

A combination of the recession and the increasing cultural diversity of the UK population means that many people either have to work on Christmas day or that they aren't celebrating Christmas at all.

While many of us are at home wrapping gifts and preparing food on Christmas Eve, around 23.2 million people will still be at work. 5.8 million will also be working on Christmas Day and 11 million on Boxing Day.

Interestingly, the study also reveals that some of us would rather be at work than spending potentially stressful time with family. 19% of festive workers deliberately swapped shifts with others so they could be at work on Christmas Day, although this may be down to an increase in pay too!
