Millions up for grabs as Google moves into venture capital

Google has begun its hunt for the world"s most exciting start-ups, as it plunges into the world of venture capitalism.

Google Ventures, a new venture capital wing of the internet giant, has pledged to pump millions of dollars into bootstrapped companies. It is offering early stage funding, as well as consultancy from Google.

Although the size of the fund has not been announced, it is rumoured that Google Ventures is likely to invest around $100 million around the world over the course of the next year.

Richard Anton, a UK-based venture capitalist, told the BBC that the current crisis means now "is a good time to be investing and a good time to build companies."
