Jump in mortgage approvals, agreed sales

The number of homebuyers rose significantly last month, according to new figures released today.

The survey, published by market watchers Hometracker, suggests that there was a 9 per cent increase in the number of prospective buyers registered with estate agents. This comes after the previous month"s increase of 17 per cent.

Completed sales also increased by 19 per cent, although volumes are still below normal.

Meanwhile, the Bank of England has said that mortgage approvals rose to 38,000 in February, up from 32,000 in the previous month.

Even with this increase, Britons made a massive net repayment of consumer debt, paying back £245 million more in February than they borrowed.
