The government will miss its targets for apprenticeships, according to the Tories.

As previously reported by Simply Business, the government has set a target of 130,000 apprenticeships to be completed every year by 2010-11. Government ministers maintain that these targets will be met, but according to the Tories figures show that the number of apprenticeships completed last year rose by only 800 to 112,600.

If this trend continues, the target will not be met until 2029-30.

Apprenticeships provide young people with new skill sets and help to create a highly skilled workforce. Furthermore, they apprentices provide a valuable, motivated source of labour for businesses.

The government is offering inducements for businesses to take on apprentices, including contributions to wages and the cost of training. The government insists that 130,000 apprenticeships will be completed in 2010-11.
