It is not up to landlords to safeguard their properties from carbon monoxide leakages, one celebrity property expert has claimed.

According to Kirsty Allsopp, presenter of television shows Location Location Location and the Property Chain, the responsibility currently rests with the tenant.

She said that it would be great if landlords were legally bound to do something to protect renters against carbon monoxide leakages but as yet this is not the case.

However, Ms Allsopp stated alarms cost £15, which to protect a family, is not a lot of money to spend.

"At the moment, lots of people are tightening their belts and looking to their finances but it is £15 and it takes seconds to put in the alarm. That's the number one thing you can do," she concluded.

Figures from the Carbon Monoxide and Gas Safety Society showed 493 people died due to causes related to carbon monoxide between September 1st 1995 and February 29th 2008.
