Series seven of the Great British Bake Off is in full swing, and the continuing popularity of the BBC show seems to be one of the reasons for the ever-rising number of home baking businesses.
Bake Off triggers long-term trend
The GBBO effect is well-established, with Simply Business first reporting a TV-related spike in cake making and baking businesses back in 2011, following series two of Bake Off. Our data showed that quote requests from cake-based startups were up 54 per cent from the previous year and had leapt by a whopping 325 per cent from 2009.
Since then, viewing numbers for The Great British Bake Off have soared with each new series, and the number of baking start-ups has kept growing too. Our latest data shows that requests for cake maker and decorator insurance and home baking insurance are up significantly from last year.

Baking fever sweeps the country
As the GBBO contestants compete to make the best cakes, biscuits, breads and pastries, Brits across the country are inspired to try their hand at baking.
While the Simply Business figures show that some people see this as an entrepreneurial opportunity, the programme also triggers a more general increase in enthusiasm for baking, dubbed ‘the Bake Off effect’, which sees demand for particular ingredients and equipment leap after they’re used in the show.
After a couple of contestants used salted caramel in their bakes last year, Waitrose reported a 33 per cent rise in sales of their salted caramel flavouring, while Ocado said that sales of ramekins were up by 300 per cent after a creme brûlée signature challenge.

How will your cakes reach your customers? If you don’t have a business premises then you may need to offer delivery, as sending cakes by courier can be a headache.
You need to comply with certain health and safety regulations and register your premises, even if you’re running your baking business from home.
Make the most of how great your cakes look. Take good pictures and focus on building a reputation on visual social media platforms like Instagram.
Advertise offline, too. Consider running a stall at your local fete or food market, giving out free samples, and building a relationship with nearby wedding or party venues.
