We spoke to Jonathan Wall - the accountant who can’t be fired - about his business and brand-new billboard.
Jonathan’s son Alex helped him bag the prize thanks to an award-winning vent back in April, and he’s claimed a billboard in Harrow, close to his home in Middlesex. An established accountant with plenty of acumen we wanted to learn a bit more about him, so we fired over some questions. Read on to find out some about Jonathan and the story behind Elman Wall…
What was the motivation for starting your business?
An urge to create something for myself and build a legacy. Also, I appreciated that I wasn’t a model employee, so starting Elman Wall meant I couldn’t be fired!
When did you first start your business?
Back in 1995 so we’re just coming up to our 20th year. Group turnover is heading healthily into the millions and we now employ 35 people - a far cry from where we started.
How do you promote your business?
As a professional services company most of our business comes through referrals, thanks to our reliable reputation built up after many years. However, in sectors where we have real specialism - like the travel industry - we’re always looking to build our profile. We do this largely through events, where we share expertise or provide sponsorship.
How important a role do you feel small businesses like yours play in your local community?
In addition to our role as a local employer we like to see ourselves as an information hub. Whatever our clients need, we probably know someone who can help them.
What is the most difficult part of running an Audit Tax advisory business?
We’re a client-centric business, so we need to ensure that we’re delivering a world-class service to our clients constantly. Maintaining this can be tricky, but it’s good to be ambitious!
What are your plans for your business over the next five years?
Over the course of the next five years we aim to grow steadily, adding innovative new services and specifications as Elman Wall expands.
Do you have any advice for those considering starting a business like yours?
Think big but realistically… and enjoy the ride!
How will this billboard help your business?
We’re hopeful it’ll raise our profile. It’s a new form of advertising for us, so we’re excited to see the results!
