Right before Christmas, Startups Awards celebrated their 10th annual ceremony, whipping the UK entrepreneurscape into a frenzy, with Simply Business backing the event as headline sponsors.
What are the Startups Awards?
Bringing together and recognising some of Britain’s brightest new businesses, the awards reward startups for innovation, ambition and creativity.
Entrants are of an excellent calibre and come from across the startup scene, an array of businesses brimming with potential battling for the awards on offer.
How were we involved?
As headline sponsors, Simply Business was represented by CEO Jason Stockwood, who sat on the judging panel earlier in the winter. Four of the original 12 categories were under his eye – a tough job given the quality.
Elsewhere, Chris Slater – our Chief Operational Officer – kicked off proceedings on the ceremony day itself, his inspiring address setting a tone of celebration for all and respect for the shortlisted businesses.
Stand out entries
YPlan were the success story of the year picking up two titles; Mobile Business of the Year and Simply Business’s Start Up of the Year. A mobile app allowing users to create a London night out on the cuff, with it you can browse a range of events and buy tickets in a matter of clicks.
As the world’s first mobile ticketing app their ingenuity caught the judges' attention, but this was far from just a tech affair and we saw winners from across the startup spectrum.
Freelancers, too, had their own separate category and there we saw Lovework win. A recruitment business focused specifically on startups their efforts here won them admirers.
Finally, huge congratulations goes to this year's brand new Social Impact Business category champions - The Raspberry Pi Foundation. Richly deserved, and a spark of surprise on the day.
These winners are just a few of many though, feel free to see the full list here!
Congratulations to everyone involved
The day was blur of mutual respect and celebration, and something we at Simply Business were so proud to be a part of. As Chris said in his opening words, supporting small business is something we’re passionate about, as we were, are and continue to be a startup at heart.
Congratulations to all those shortlisted and to every startup that picked up an award. In the ten years since it’s inception we’ve seen winners become household names, The Cambridge Satchel Company, Naked Wines and Ella’s Kitchen amongst the illustrious (former) startups.
